Background of the Study:
Traditional councils have long served as custodians of cultural norms and conflict resolution mechanisms within many Nigerian communities. In Oyo East, these councils are integral to maintaining social harmony and resolving disputes through indigenous practices (Olatunde, 2023). They provide accessible, culturally resonant avenues for addressing conflicts outside formal judicial systems, thereby complementing official governance structures (Adekunle, 2024). Traditional councils draw on historical and customary methods that have evolved over generations, emphasizing reconciliation, community involvement, and restorative justice (Balogun, 2025). However, as modern legal frameworks expand, the role of these councils in local governance faces both opportunities and challenges. This study explores the influence of traditional councils on conflict resolution in Oyo East, assessing how their traditional practices interact with contemporary governance requirements and contribute to sustainable peace and social cohesion (Olatunde, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite their historical significance, traditional councils in Oyo East are increasingly challenged by modern legal processes and political influences. Their effectiveness in conflict resolution is sometimes undermined by the lack of formal recognition and integration with statutory systems. This study aims to assess the relevance and challenges of traditional councils in mediating local conflicts (Adekunle, 2024).
